Yes you heard me…who are you? well some might say: “I´m a physician”, “I´m a dancer”, “I´m a chef”, “I´m a teacher”….& then I´d say yes that´s fine, but I´m not asking you what you do for a living, I´m asking you who are you? well, the same people (a bit concerned) might say: well “I love cooking”, “I´m fascinated by paintings”, “Reading a good book is what makes my day”, “Performing on stage is my passion”….& then I´d say, again, yes that´s all well, but I´m not asking you what you enjoy doing, I´m asking you who are you? & then those same people, after giving me a dirty look, might inquire: “What do you want me to say to you? aha BINGO…I know there is no easy answer for that one….but plenty of answers there are. Let´s see shall we: Some say we are spiritual beings trapped in a body, others believe we are the sum of our life experiences, yet others say we are energy. And the list goes on….
This is my take on this one: We are made an entirely new creation, in Christ, just as God created the heavens & the earth. He made them out of nothing, just as He did with us. He doesn’t merely clean up our old selves; He makes an entirely new self. God Himself, in the person of His Holy Spirit, takes up residence in our hearts. We are in Christ and He is in us.
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God´s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God & co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Romans 8:14-17
If someone came to me & asked me: “Who are you? I wouldn´t hesitate to answer: “I am a child of God” because this simple but profound answer, defines who I really am, both body & spirit. And with this, I am acknowledging my creator, because without Him I´d be nothing.
